I’ve been fortunate enough to get closely involved in lots of different forms of fundraising in my 26 years as a professional fundraiser.
Whether it was managing teams in different income streams and learning from them, or moving into management positions with a wider brief, or moving into organisations with a different income generation mix and portfolio, I would always encourage fundraisers to seek opportunities to step out of their core discipline and learn what they can.
One constant, throughout my time working for seven different charities (and now quite often in my consultancy work), has been the privilege of talking to supporters about the difference they can make through a gift in their Will.
I love legacy fundraising perhaps more than any other ask, because, like our own mortality, it’s a real leveller! It’s the one occasion in which almost everyone can make a big gift to a cause which has been important to them, should they choose to do so. And my experience has been that very often it’s people of relatively modest means who make the largest gifts.
That’s why I was delighted to accept an invitation from Nova Fundraising to join their free surgery on legacy fundraising for small charities on 14th July at 11am.
