About

Sometimes its good to share a problem. To talk to someone who has come up against a similar issue before.

I have been a fundraising manager since 1997, working for ten years with international organisations (WaterAid, Amnesty International, VSO), before switching to work in senior fundraising roles in UK health and social care charities (United Response, Breast Cancer Now, Hospice of St Francis).

Since 2018, I’ve supported charities when they have needed some help or advice, or just another experienced pair of hands. I’ve enjoyed the variety and I’ve enjoyed meeting with and working alongside new people.

Whether it’s a feasibility study for a new area of fundraising, filling a role vacated by a colleague moving on (and recruiting my successor and other team members), training staff on fundraising, or having a longer-term input on a retained basis, I can help your charity get where it wants to go.

I charge variable rates so that smaller charities (with income of less than £1m p.a.) can afford to work with me, and I charge less for longer pieces of work.

Joel was our Interim Head of Fundraising for just under a year, from May 2021 to March 2022. He line managed me working on all areas of individual giving and legacy marketing. Specific projects we worked on together included setting up a new free wills agency, setting up two lotteries with two separate External Lottery Managers and testing Branded Opt-in campaign, both with a regular giving and a lottery ask. We also worked on a mailing together to promote legacies to existing supporters and we organised a supporter reception to our regular givers.

Joel was a massive help to me and an invaluable asset for the charity while we were lacking in key personnel in 2021. I really enjoyed working with Joel and really benefited from his many years of experience in the charity sector. I still miss working with him two months on!

Alan Sparke, RSBC, Senior Individual Giving Manager

Joel is a great fundraising consultant and charity sector professional. It was a delight and an education to work with him on improving our church’s individual giving activities. Joel carried out a comprehensive review of individual giving to identify what we could do to improve our fundraising efforts and increase income, within the resource constraints of a small charitable organisation. His final report recommended achievable goals and inspirational ideas to enable our disparate activities to become a coherent IG programme. I cannot recommend Joel highly enough, he is professional in all his dealings, a great communicator and an engaging personality. Joel brings with him a wealth of experience in fundraising that has proved invaluable to St Pancras Old Church, a much-loved local church, heritage site and community hub.

The challenges and opportunities of a start-up charity are very different from operating within established systems.  Thank you for your willingness to take on those challenges and thus help us optimise the opportunities… With major help from you, we now have policies, systems and structures in place.  It’s been quite a year!

Judith Gates, Head for Change Chair of Trustees

Joel has done a fantastic job as an Interim heading up our Individual Giving and Legacy teams. He quickly grasped the brief and helped to see us through a difficult period expertly keeping the programme on track. He has worked really well with the team and seamlessly led them through a tricky budgeting process. He has built some great relationships to be taken forward and has astutely delivered exactly what was needed.
